Bund Run – The Shanghai Bund

Route Specifics

  • Wide promenade that sits on the western bank of the Huangpu. The Huangpu flows north to south.
  • The historical Shanghai International Settlements were here. Now these historic buildings houses banks, posh fashion labels and luxury hotels
  • The opposite eastern bank is Pudong commercial area, where many iconic skyscrapers can be found. Some say the opposite eastern bank is a better place to hang out.
  • 1.6km from Wai Bai Du Bridge in the northern end to the Pier on Yan An Road in the south.
  • Suzhou Creek is at the northern end of the Bund. It snakes inland due west.

Getting to the Bund

  • Take the Shanghai Metro Line 2. The green line.
  • Get off at East Nanjing Road.
  • Take Exit 7. Turn left and walk to the intersection of Henan Middle Road and Nanjing Road.
  • Turn left onto Najing Road at the intersection. The Bund is straight ahead, no more than 500m. You will be at the northern end of the Bund where the Wai Bai Du Bridge is.

Best time to go

In the morning to beat the traffic. Any later than 10am you would be playing dodge the tourist. Avoid the evenings too.

Refreshments

Plenty of F&B outlets in the park below the Bund. More on Nanjing Road

Freshen Up Places

Plenty of washrooms to freshen up in the park below the Bund

The bend in the Creek that obscures the reference point, the Tower. Actually we could just make out the tip of the antenna on the Tower

From Bridge No: 3 on the Suzhou Creek. The Tower was not visible

Seen through the gates of the park by the Creek. Perspective

Back on the Bund. Dead center facing the Tower

The Gutzlaff signal tower, established in 1865 is 50m tall. Ships on the Huangpu used it as a reference point back in the days
