Making a video is hard work

How difficult can it be to make a video? While advancements in technology have made it easier, at least, easier for someone who knows what he’s doing, it is still amazing to see how it is really done by a pro. It is not just about pointing a camera or smartphone and hitting the record button. It is certainly much more; camera angles, lighting, colour of attire, ambient sound, and of course putting all the video shots together to tell a story.  And, me, messing my lines made the job a tad more hard work with countless repeated takes.

I had an opportunity to experience first hand the making of a video.  In my life long learning journey and to tap benefits from my Skills future fund, I added to my inventory of skills by attending a workshop. The final assignment was to present a coaching session. Hence the making of a video.

I was lucky to have a pro as a friend. Hashim agreed to help me shoot, edit and produce the coaching video. Hashim is a pro at this, it is his day job, if he is not running.

Here are some considerations when making a pro video:

  • Weather
  • Lighting
  • Ambient sound
  • Camera angles
  • Background colour
  • Colour of attire and props
  • Rehearsals are important so you do not mess up the script.
  • If all the above is somehow not in sync, then a retake becomes necessary. And there were plenty of those on shooting day.
  • Post production, editing, splicing to come up with the final product.

The end product is so far removed and so much better at telling a story than the raw footages. Excusing the amateurish performance of the main actor this video production by Hashim was excellent.
