NS50 – ITD Mates Run the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon

There have not been many Malay Muslim NS stories (I think I have not seen any) and representations of our community’s contribution to NS and nation building is at best small. This being the 50th anniversary of NS, I think it is worthy and timely that such a story be told. This story hopes to showcase our NS contribution, the bonds of brotherhood and friendship forged during BMT, Safincos and unit days.

We are a group of guys who enlisted in Dec 1984. All of us were posted to Jaguar Company in ITD. The command found out that all the Malays were in this Company and in the spirit of integration decided to split ‘The Malay Regiment’ as we took to calling ourselves then into different companies. Only to be brought back together again in Safincos Bravo Coy. We have stayed in touch throughout the years.

This was us in 1985. Newly minted and dashing young Infantry Section Leaders, we all were.

Some of these guys will run the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2017 in 3 categories; 10km, half marathon and marathon. We are doing this to commemorate NS50 and the Malay community’s contribution to NS, the Army and Nation building. This also represents our 2017 #bigkidmoment

This is some of us now. This picture was taken in 2016 when we went out on a trek in Macritchie forests.

This series of posts will be to document our training and progress in achieving our goal and our journey toward our #bigkidmoment.

As part of our training, we will be taking part in the Urgent Run 2017 #UrgentRun. This annual run is organised by World Toilet Organization.
